The University of Wisconsin football program announced today the hiring of Badgers legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Thomas as its new offensive line coach, a move aimed at revitalizing the team’s storied tradition as “O-Line U.” Thomas, a Wisconsin native and one of the most decorated offensive linemen in football history, returns to Madison with a bold mission: “I’m returning to redeem the reputation of my football program,” he declared at a press conference at Camp Randall Stadium.
Thomas, 40, brings unparalleled credentials to the role. A unanimous All-American and 2006 Outland Trophy winner during his time at Wisconsin (2003-06), Thomas went on to a remarkable 11-year NFL career with the Cleveland Browns, earning 10 consecutive Pro Bowl selections and a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2023.
His streak of 10,363 consecutive snaps is an NFL record, underscoring his durability and excellence. Now, Thomas steps into coaching to restore the Badgers’ offensive line to its former dominance after a disappointing 5-7 season in 2024, the program’s first bowl-less campaign since 2001.
Head coach Luke Fickell, who has faced scrutiny for the team’s recent struggles, called Thomas’ hiring a “game-changer” for the program. “Joe embodies everything Wisconsin football stands for—toughness, precision, and pride,” Fickell said. “His experience as one of the best to ever play the game, combined with his deep connection to this university, makes him the perfect leader to rebuild our offensive line and elevate our program.” The move comes as part of a broader coaching staff overhaul following the dismissal of offensive coordinator Phil Longo, with Thomas replacing Jack Bicknell Jr., who departed after two seasons.
Thomas’ return has sparked excitement among Badgers fans, who see him as a symbol of the program’s golden era under coaches like Barry Alvarez and Bret Bielema. Wisconsin’s offensive line has long been a pipeline to the NFL, producing stars like Thomas, Chris McIntosh, and Kevin Zeitler.
However, recent years have seen the unit struggle with consistency, failing to match the physical, smash-mouth identity that defined past successes. Thomas aims to change that. “Wisconsin has always been about dominating the trenches,” he said. “We’re going to get back to that relentless, physical style that makes teams dread facing us.”
In his new role, Thomas will work with a talented but young offensive line, including standouts like Jack Nelson and Riley Mahlman, while mentoring recruits like 2027 prospect Ethan McIntosh, son of athletic director Chris McIntosh. Thomas’ coaching philosophy, honed during his 2024 stint with the Munich Ravens in the European League of Football, emphasizes technique, footwork, and cohesion—hallmarks of his own playing career.
“It’s about perfecting the details,” Thomas explained. “Four yards a play, every play, with five guys moving as one. That’s Wisconsin football.”
The hiring has also drawn praise from former teammates and coaches. Paul Chryst, Thomas’ former offensive coordinator, called him “a natural leader who will inspire these kids.” Current players expressed enthusiasm, with center Jake Renfro stating, “Having a Hall of Famer like Joe coaching us is unreal.
He’s been where we want to go.” Fans on social media echoed the sentiment, with posts on X describing Thomas as “the missing piece” to restore Badger pride.
Beyond the field, Thomas’ deep ties to Wisconsin—he hosts the “Badger Bigs” podcast with his wife, Annie, and supports the Varsity Collective for NIL opportunities—make him a cultural fit. His mission is clear: return Wisconsin to Big Ten contention and reestablish its reputation as a powerhouse. As Thomas put it, “This is home. It’s time to bring the Badgers back to where we belong.”
The Badgers open their 2025 season against UCLA on August 30, with Thomas’ impact already anticipated to reshape the team’s identity. For a program seeking redemption, the return of its greatest lineman could be the spark it needs.
