Nearly a decade after the world lost the legendary Prince Rogers Nelson, the late icon is about to shake the music industry once again. In a surprise announcement from the Prince Estate this week, a long-rumored cache of unreleased material personally archived by the artist himself will finally see the light of day in an official 2025 release titled “Unreleased Genius.”
The new compilation is set to feature more than 30 previously unheard tracks, spanning from the early 1980s through the mid-2000s. According to the estate, the selections were meticulously pulled from Prince’s legendary vault at Paisley Park a literal treasure trove of tapes, demos, and finished albums the artist never shared publicly during his lifetime.
“This is not just a posthumous album
it’s a statement,” said Troy Carter, advisor to the Prince Estate. “These songs reveal a raw, experimental, and fiercely independent side of Prince that even his most loyal fans haven’t experienced.”
The announcement sent a ripple through the music world. Within hours, #Prince2025 was trending on X (formerly Twitter), and music journalists, fans, and fellow musicians began speculating on the nature of the tracks. While full details remain under wraps, early reports suggest the collection includes a mix of funk-fueled jams, political commentary, and deeply personal ballads some featuring instruments and techniques Prince rarely used in his released catalog.
“He was always ahead of his time,” said Sheila E., longtime collaborator and friend. “Prince recorded music that the world just wasn’t ready for but maybe now, finally, it is.”
The 2025 drop will be accompanied by a deluxe vinyl box set, a streaming rollout, and a short documentary featuring never-before-seen footage of Prince inside Paisley Park during his most private recording sessions. A special listening experience is also planned at the Minneapolis estate for select fans and industry guests.
Beyond the music, this release is stirring a deeper conversation around legacy and control. Prince famously fought for ownership of his masters and was deeply protective of his unreleased work. Yet, many believe he always intended for the world to eventually hear what was in the vault just not on anyone else’s terms.
“This project is being handled with the utmost care and respect,” said Carter. “We believe Prince would be proud.”
“Unreleased Genius” is slated for global release in April 2025, coinciding with the ninth anniversary of Prince’s passing. One thing is certain: The Purple One may be gone, but his genius continues to evolve and inspire.
