In a revelation that has sent shockwaves through the music industry, Dave Grohl has confirmed the existence of previously unheard Nirvana recordings tracks that have remained in the vault for over three decades. During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer dropped the bombshell, describing the recordings as “raw, emotional, and undeniably Nirvana.”
The announcement comes as the world marks over 30 years since the release of Nevermind, the groundbreaking 1991 album that catapulted Nirvana into superstardom and permanently altered the landscape of rock music. Grohl revealed that the tracks were recorded in the early ‘90s during downtime between studio sessions and were thought to be long lost or deliberately buried.
“These aren’t polished studio cuts,” Grohl explained. “They’re rough, stripped down, and full of the kind of energy Kurt brought into every room. Listening to them now feels like a punch to the chest in the best way.”
According to Grohl, the tapes were recently discovered in a sealed storage container belonging to the late Kurt Cobain. Frances Bean Cobain, Kurt’s daughter, reportedly gave her blessing to begin remastering and preparing the tracks for release, calling it “a chance for the world to hear another side of my father’s artistry.”
The unreleased material reportedly includes five full tracks with Cobain’s vocals and guitar, Grohl on drums, and Krist Novoselic on bass. While specific song titles have not been revealed, Grohl hinted that one of the tracks “could have easily been a B-side to ‘Heart-Shaped Box’” and that another “shows Kurt experimenting with melodies in a way fans have never heard before.”
Music historians and fans alike are already buzzing with anticipation. Social media erupted following the announcement, with the hashtag #NewNirvana trending within minutes. Industry insiders believe the release could become one of the most significant posthumous music events in recent history.
While no official release date has been announced, Grohl confirmed that the tracks are undergoing a careful remastering process to preserve their raw essence. He also hinted at a possible limited vinyl release, with all proceeds going toward mental health initiatives and suicide prevention programs causes close to Nirvana’s legacy.
“For years, I wasn’t ready to open that chapter again,” Grohl said. “But these songs deserve to be heard. This is for the fans, and for Kurt.”
With the promise of new Nirvana music on the horizon, the rock world waits eager and emotional for the return of a voice that defined a generation.
